Exclusive Talks Signal Major JF-17 Jet Sale from Pakistan to Indonesia

Indonesia & Pakistan in Advanced Talks for Major Defense Deal
According to an Reuters report, Indonesia’s Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin held high-level meetings in Islamabad with Pakistan’s Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu.
Three security officials with direct knowledge of the discussions confirmed that the talks focused heavily on combat jets and armed drones. Two of the sources described the negotiations as “advanced”, with more than 40 JF-17 Thunder multi-role fighters currently on the table. One official specifically highlighted the JF-17 Thunder the lightweight, multi-role fighter jointly developed by Pakistan and China as the centerpiece of the deal.
Indonesia has also expressed serious interest in Pakistan’s Shahpar-series armed drones, known for their reconnaissance and precision strike capabilities.
Retired Air Marshal Asim Suleiman, who has been briefed on recent Pakistani air force export deals, told Reuters the agreement is firmly “in the pipeline” and estimated the number of JF-17s at close to 40 aircraft.
Additional talks under discussion include:
- Air defense systems
- Comprehensive training programs for Indonesian pilots, technicians, and engineers at various levels
Indonesia’s Defence Ministry confirmed the meeting took place. Spokesperson Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait described the discussions as centered on general defense cooperation, strategic dialogue, and long-term partnership opportunities while stressing that no final decisions have been made yet.
This latest development builds directly on Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s high-profile visit to Pakistan late last year, which dramatically accelerated bilateral military ties.
JF-17 Thunder Gains Strong Momentum After 2025 Combat Experience
Interest in the JF-17 Thunder surged significantly after Pakistan’s short but intense 2025 border clash with India, during which the aircraft saw real combat deployment for the first time. This实战 (actual combat) exposure substantially boosted the jet’s international credibility and market appeal.
Pakistan has recently secured several major export contracts:
- A $4 billion package with Libya’s National Army including JF-17s
- Sale of Block III variants to Azerbaijan
- Earlier successful deliveries to Myanmar and Nigeria
Retired Air Marshal Aamir Masood revealed to Reuters that Pakistan is either pursuing or has already finalized JF-17-related deals with six different countries. Defense exports have become a core pillar of Islamabad’s military-industrial strategy.
JF-17 stands out in the global market due to its:
- Genuine multi-role capability (air-to-air, air-to-ground, reconnaissance)
- Significantly lower acquisition and operating costs compared to Western equivalents
- Affordable and relatively simple maintenance ecosystem especially attractive to budget-conscious air forces
Indonesia Accelerates Urgent Air Force Modernization
Jakarta is in the midst of a rapid and large-scale replacement of its aging fighter fleet. Rising regional tensions, particularly in the South China Sea, have created a strong sense of urgency.
Recent major acquisitions include:
- 42 Dassault Rafale jets from France (contract signed 2022, ~$8.1 billion, deliveries beginning early 2026)
- 48 KAAN fifth-generation fighters from Turkey (agreement reached last year, with ongoing co-production negotiations with Turkish Aerospace Industries)
These purchases reflect Indonesia’s deliberate policy of supplier diversification and strategic flexibility. Adding the cost-effective JF-17 would complement the premium Western and Turkish platforms, helping Jakarta avoid over-reliance on any single partner while maintaining robust deterrence at manageable cost.
Deep Historical & Strategic Ties Fuel Momentum
Pakistan and Indonesia share longstanding anti-colonial roots and historical goodwill. Military cooperation dates back decades, including mutual support during past regional conflicts.
Both countries are active members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and have signed several recent agreements that have rapidly deepened defense relations.
This foundation of trust and shared interest in regional stability has significantly eased the current negotiations. Experts believe the potential pact could eventually expand beyond aircraft sales to include joint military exercises, technology transfer, and maintenance cooperation.
Pakistan’s Defense Export Changed the Market
Pakistan’s defense industry is experiencing a remarkable rise. Export revenues are climbing steadily, and the proven combat performance of Pakistani systems (especially post-2025) has become a powerful marketing advantage.
If finalized, the Indonesia deal would rank among Islamabad’s largest-ever defense export contracts and further cement the JF-17’s transition from a domestic workhorse to a credible global contender.
Remaining Challenges & Cautious Optimism
Some analysts remain cautious, pointing to:
- Historically long timelines for major Indonesian defense acquisitions
- Potential logistical complexity of integrating yet another aircraft type into an already diverse fleet
- Ongoing geopolitical balancing particularly between U.S., Chinese, and Western interests
Despite these factors, sources close to the talks remain optimistic. Many believe closure is relatively near.
Strategic Implications for Asia’s Changing Defense Landscape
Asia’s arms market continues its rapid expansion as countries accelerate modernization programs. Indonesia’s multi-supplier spree is a textbook example of risk diversification in an uncertain security environment.
Pakistan stands to gain significantly increased export revenue directly supports domestic R&D, production capacity, and technological self-reliance.
A successful Indonesia Pakistan defense partnership would strengthen deterrence for both nations, deepen strategic cooperation, and send important signals across the Indo-Pacific.
We will continue to closely monitor this and other developments in Asian defense cooperation.
